This Halloween make your costume come to life with jewelry! Rock an ensemble centered around iconic pieces and pair with basic, easy-to-find clothing. Let your accessories do the work, and your creativity shine!
If putting together a chic, original costume for Halloween has you stressed, relax! We know that finding all the right elements of an outfit can be a chore, so we've saved you the hassle! This year, focus just on the fun, sparkly stuff, and then you will have invested in pieces you can wear over and over, and designed a unique look to boot!
What better jewels to begin with than diamonds? Marilyn Monroe's character, Lorelei Lee, in the 1953 film "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes" said (sang) it best with "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend." Dress as Lorelei this Halloween, and your costume could make this very true statement. Compromising pictures with a diamond mine owner and marrying for money not required.
Sure, finding a dress with such an impressive bow might be a challenge, but why not do a modern take on this classic beauty? Start with this adorable dress from J. Crew, add some gloves from the party store, and then go to town with the diamonds! Try splurging on one item (diamonds are forever, after all!) and fill in the rest from your favorite stores (Forever 21, Target, and Kohls are always great spots for cheap, sparkly finds).
Finish with some fabulous red lipstick and a great blonde 'do and you'll be sure to turn heads, and earn your fair share of tiaras!

Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman
Okay, I'll admit it. This one's a toughie. But if you have the means, and a gorgeous head of red hair, this could be the greatest costume ever. The scene where Edward gives Vivian the diamond and ruby necklace before the opera is one of jewelry's most beloved film appearances. And did you know his snapping the box closed was totally improvised?! Adorable.
I've often seen Vivian's, shall we say, professional outfit represented on Halloween, but never this more elegant one. The patent leather boots didn't cut it on Rodeo Drive, so please, someone go for this! Note: Richard Gere not included.

Kathy Wakile is the darling of the Real Housewives of New Jersey for her down to earth attitude and putting family first. When I got the call to style her for the upcoming reunion, I could not have been more thrilled. I have to admit; one of my guilty pleasures is that I am a Real Housewives super fan.
Meeting Kathy she was as I expected, kind and approachable, someone you would describe as ‘sweet’. But behind that sweet demeanor you could see her inner diva unfold as she went through my trays of jewelry. One thing Kathy loves is Diamonds, and she knows how to wear them! We selected some statement pieces that would make Mariah Carey jealous…

As we officially approach the end of summer and feel the crisp morning nip in the air, we immediately jump into cozy sweaters and fall boots. We forget that in September we can experience some lovely weather that helps us transition from our Summer wardrobe into our Fall one.
That same principle applies to our jewelry wardrobe! The pieces you have been living in all summer long still have a place in your look for early Fall.
Your favorite gold hoop earrings or that bold watch, work well against the deeper color palettes of Fall.
My top 5 picks for jewelry that will transition you from Summer to Fall…
1) Bold cuff bracelet
The good news is that bold jewelry is a Fall 2012 jewelry trend. Remember that cuff bracelet that you have been wearing with your summer maxi dress? Well guess what? It looks amazing worn over a thin long sleeve cashmere sweater or a silky dress.
These cuff bracelets are a bestseller, combining texture with metal creates a sophisticated yet forward look.
Stylists are showing cuffs worn this way. Often paired with a great hoop earring…which leads me to #2…

With special events, such as weddings, charity events & parties, such a part of our lives one area where we can stand out from the crowd is with our jewelry. I get told all the time by my clients, 'but I can't afford jewelry'...Okay, I get that. Not everyone is going to be able to purchase a pair of Diamond earrings to go with that little black dress. But here's the great news-you don't have to! Fashion jewelry these days is so elevated that you can create a red carpet ready look.
One of my favorite designers that I turn to when dressing my clients is Anna Beck. Her designs have recently been seen on the gorgeous Maria Menounos! This look is great for those who want to spice up their refined look with some bold statement pieces...
One of our bestselling earrings from this collection is her Green Amethyst chandelier ($315 available at Desires by Mikolay 914.238.2223). Green is the NEW neutral and just ads that subtle touch of cool toned color.
Ladies often feel pressure when going to an event to purchase a new dress...Spending a lot of money on a dress that you might wear once or twice is simply a waste of money. Instead of purchasing a new dress each time, invest in a great black sheath. Wear the same dress to your events, but reinvent the look with your accessories. Clothes only work for a few seasons unless you buy something super classic. Jewelry, however, lasts forever! So skip that metallic dress that happens to be on trend right now. Focus instead on some new accessories.
Another designer that I often style with is the talented Miguel Ases...Worn by celebrities from Sarah Jessica Parker to Ashley Judd, and more recently Michele Obama became a fan!
Miguel's line is all about large statement earrings, so bold you can forget about a necklace. Besides having great price points ($115-$495), many of his earrings are dual toned metallics...This appeals to me due to it's versatility...Picking up on both gold and silver tones allow the wearer to mix metals and create a more eclectic look. These bestellers showcase both the gold and silver tones.
As you can see the options are limitless...At Desires by Mikolay we specialize in being able to help you create that red carpet look on any budget! Want help creating your next event's look? Bring in your dress and my team & I will work our magic!

Til then fashionista's, Happy Shopping!

There is so much history to Pearls, it is hard not to be enamored by them...A gem that is unsurpassed by it's beauty and elegance, at one point Pearls were only worn by royalty! In today's modern world Pearls are very 'on trend' and I often get requests for them in my store Desires by Mikolay.
What is the allure all about? Well Ancient greek civilizations believed that Pearls where the hardened tears of joy that the goddess of love shook from her eyes when she was born from the sea. With that sort of romantic story, it is no wonder that Pearls are used to celebrate an important anniversary...
The one mystery that surrounds Pearls that I hear again and again is, 'What is the difference between a Cultured Pearl and a Natural Pearl?". I get it...Pearls can be confusing...The easiest way to explain this is that Cultured (or Freshwater Pearls) are created by humans...humans basically mimic the process that happens organically in nature in freshwater. Since they are created and not natural, the price on Cultured (Freshwater) Pearls are less rare and therefor more affordable.
Natural Pearls (or Saltwater Pearls) are much more rare...What happens in nature is that an irritant lodges it's way into the flesh of a mollusk, which in turn than produces a protective substance called a 'nacre'. Over time, layer upon layer of nacre is produced creating a lustrous pearl. Natural Pearls include Akoya, Tahitian & South Sea Pearls. They are much more rare and considered a luxury item.
I love this gem and recently got myself my first set of Pearl studs (at 33! I am not sure how I held out so long!). Even though my personal style is a bit more edgy, I find myself truly enjoying these earrings when I want a simple & refined look...And Pearls go with everything so it makes them easy to wear...
I love answering questions about Pearls so feel free to email me on this, or anything jewelry related to email@example.com. Or if you are in the Westchester area stop by my store, Desires by Mikolay at 55 King Street Chappaqua, NY 10514.
